New Westminster Community Television

Purpose: To provide New Westminster citizens news and information about what is happening in their community.

Concept: It will be a weekly magazine show in which a host (with a cohost, possibly) interviews volunteer reporters who cover various beats, including:

◦    City Hall
◦    Police, Fire, Court
◦    Social Service organizations
◦    Environment
◦    Business
◦    RCH Hospital, RCH Foundation, Paramedics, Flu shots, doctor visits
◦    Diversity
◦    Education – elementary and secondary & other
◦    Post-secondary education – Douglas College & other private colleges
◦    The Arts
◦    Health and Well-being
◦    Parks and Recreation, Sports
◦    Library
◦    Student reports – Douglas College, New West Seconday, other
◦    Human Interest


Format: The program will be a 45 minute magazine style with 6 to 7 segments, including 3 segments that are 8 to 10 minutes in duration and 3 to 4 short segments, ranging in length from a 1:30 minutes to 5 minutes.

In each segment, the host(s) will interview the reporters about what is happening on their beat, including, when possible, video footage inserts of reporter interviews, and B-roll for visually illuminating story, etc.

Volunteer reporters will be sought to cover these beats and will be expected to provide a report every two weeks, via Zoom with Host including video inserts, and/or in a pre-made video format.

Training: Reporters will be given one-on-one journalism training, including finding the story, getting the basic content requirements – who,what,where, when, why and how – and how to interview ie: getting value statements, and much more. In addition, they will learn the basics of video camera use.

New Westminster Community Television will also be expanding its research to find locals interested in doing video/audio work. Training will be provided for use of basic camera and audio equipment to get quality work.
